Villanelle

Eternity shines brightly in my sight
In the sky, the moon climbs ever higher
In circles ringed in darkness, held by light.

The ocean glows like silver in the night;
Em’rald glass floating above the mire
Eternity shines brightly in my sight.

The wind is calling loud upon the height
With more voices than a singing choir
In circles ringed in darkness, held by light.

The soul continues on its endless flight,
Traveling onward, yet it will never tire.
Eternity shines brightly in my sight.

Love, not yet illusion, yet not quite
Truth, tinged with passion and desire
In circles ringed in darkness, held by light.

Wonder of the shadows holds me tight,
The darkness and the light that me inspire.
Eternity shines brightly in my sight
In circles ringed in darkness, held by light.

Written 2005 for my AP Language Arts class. It came to mind the other day while reading Christopher Penczak’s Temple of Shamanic Witchcraft, which brings up some similar images of light and dark. I think it’s pretty hilarious, since I just chose the words based on easy rhymes. I do like the feel of the finished piece, though.
